Advanced Tycan methodology leads project management team through successful remote transcontinental installation

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. - June 1997 - Motek, the supply chain execution systems technology leader, announced today the successful remote transcontinental implementation of Great Mills' 240,000-sq. ft. UK distribution center.

As with every big software project, Great Mills was concerned about the usual: meeting development deadlines, testing, debugging, interfacing to existing host systems and troubleshooting. This was exacerbated by the fact that they were in the UK and Motek was in Los Angeles. Much to Great Mills' surprise, Motek exceeded their expectations.

Insisting on having one of Great Mills' programmers in LA for two weeks proved to be an excellent idea. It strengthened communication on the "Motek/Great Mills team" and reduced Great Mills' learning curve considerably. Working directly with Motek's Product Development Manager and using the built-in Priya interface generator gave Great Mills the edge needed to develop interfaces quickly to Motek's Priya warehouse management system (WMS). Assisting Great Mills in its Priya deployment was Motek's Tycan implementation methodology. This methodology provides a roadmap which the project management team uses to guide the project step-by-step, even remotely. Tycan outlines all team members' responsibilities, offers guidelines for team meetings, identifies expectations, and develops time estimates for completing the project. Tycan also creates a structure for communicating unexpected problems early, and in a proactive manner to resolve issues quickly.

Priya has helped make significant improvements in areas of overriding concern to Great Mills - including accuracy in orders shipped to stores and floor inventory. Priya, Motek's award-winning WMS, is the cornerstone of Great Mills' new distribution system. Priya is responsible for managing all of the activity within the walls of the warehouse and interfaces to an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) system by Egemin that handles up to 9,000 small, slow moving products. Priya also interfaces to an AS/400-based Purchasing and Store Order Management legacy system.
