MOTEK® RECEIVES SMITHSONIAN AWARD NOMINATION
Recognition for Motek's Innovative Technology

BEVERLY HILLS, CA (January 1, 1994) - Ann Price, CEO of Motek Information Systems, Inc. (Motek), is pleased to accept the Computerworld Smithsonian Award Nomination for Motek's Inventory Management System. Cited for "innovative use of new and existing technologies," Motek joins the ranks of the 41 best applications in the Manufacturing Category recognized by the 1994 nominating committee. Motek's application will become part of the permanent research collection at the Smithsonian Institution. Should Motek be selected as a category winner, Motek's application will go on permanent display at the Smithsonian's "Information Age" exhibit already seen by more than four million visitors at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Each year the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards program singles out for recognition those applications that, in the views of industry leaders, will have the most significant, positive impact on society. The men and women selected "are honored as creative heroes of the Information Age, who set examples for future generations."

"Five years ago, Pat McGovern and I began the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program. Its goal was to locate, recognize, and record applications of information technology that were transforming America. The program was unusual for the Smithsonian. Traditionally, we have waited years or even decades before trying to determine and document historically important developments. In this case, we couldn't wait. Information technology changes too quickly and its history is evanescent," says Roger Kennedy, Director Emeritus of the National Museum of American History for the Smithsonian Institution. For the first time this year, the database is easily accessible to the public via CD-ROM in the hopes that many students will use it to discover the important ways that information technology is changing their world. Each year the program creates a special display within the exhibition focusing on the winners of that year's awards and recognizing their achievements.

The Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program is part of a broad effort to document the evolution of information technology and its increasingly important effects on society, and to promote understanding of the new Industrial Revolution. Each year, members of the Chairmen's Committee, comprised of leaders of the information technology industry, single out and nominate applications that in their view reflect the best that the industry has to offer and best correspond to the objectives of the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program. These judges include CEO's of companies like Apple Computer, AT&T, Borland, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Lotus, Microsoft, Novell, and Xerox.

"For the industry, this is an occasion to take stock. To think about how creative people have put together existing technologies and made the whole much greater than the parts. To reflect on the prospects innovations are opening to people around the world," says Patrick J. McGovern, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of International Data Group, last year's Committee Chairmen.

Borland International, the third largest independent software developer in the United States, submitted Motek's nomination to the Awards Program committee. Motek is a Borland SQL Partner and Borland Systems Integrator, using their language and database products in systems like the one nominated.

Motek's Priya uses bar code scanning Radio Frequency (RF) wireless computers, a cost effective PC platform, and real-time links to existing mainframe systems. The system has been successfully installed and is operating at a number of Fortune 1000 companies, including Smart & Final, Inc. (SFI), located in Los Angeles, California. SFI is the nation's largest cash and carry grocery retailer, with over 200 stores in the west. Priya utilizes over 30 Spread Spectrum portable RF computers to automate product and information flow in SFI's 500,000 ft² warehouse/distribution center. The system has a real-time, two-way interface to an existing IBM mainframe system. Priya is the only functional third party RF link to this widely installed IBM system in production today. Without requiring any change to IBM's software, or to the existing host system's environment, Motek's PC-based RF Server software provides an intelligent, plug-in, RF interface to SFI's mainframe host system.

As a result, SFI has increased warehouse space utilization by over 10% and realized average material handling labor productivity increases of 25%, along with eliminating the need to conduct full physical inventories. For SFI, the technology's impact means an approximate one-year return on their investment. Motek accepts the Computerworld Smithsonian Award Nomination as a reflection of Motek's vision and dedication in applying information technology to work in solving real-world business problems.
