ROADTOWN WINS MICROSOFT PINNACLE AWARD
SAN DIEGO, March 9, 2005 — RoadTown Wholesale Trading, Ltd. accepts Microsoft customer achievement award for Teamwork. Motek, RoadTown and others were recognized at an exclusive luncheon held at Convergence 2005 with Bill Gates. Pinnacle Awards honor customers that have achieved outstanding success with Microsoft® Business Solutions applications. The Excellence in Teamwork Award recognizes customers whose collaborative efforts in their organization, with Microsoft Business Solutions or with their partners, have produced a result that would not have been achieved without the collaboration. Roadtown Wholesale Grocers, the largest grocery store chain and wholesaler in the British Virgin Islands has overhauled its warehousing operations with Motek’s Priya warehouse management system. They simultaneously replaced their host based ERP software with Windows based Microsoft Great Plains. An integration effort of this magnitude required the expertise and support of several Microsoft business partners. Motek worked closely with these partners and Roadtown to bring wireless information to operations management and executive management in real time. Roadtown’s business is unique, with a 50-50 business split between wholesale and retail. The company operates 100,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space divided among five buildings that service Roadtown stores and those of other grocery chains, along with Roadtown’s wholesale customers within the British Virgin Islands. The operation is a complex one as bulk storage, picking storage, frozen, chilled and a meat repacking area are spread out among the various warehousing buildings. Roadtown originally operated on a UNIX system. All warehousing operations were paper-based and required employees to key transactions into a terminal, leading to delays and errors. “Our biggest challenge before installing Priya was that we could not sustain our growth,” says Irma Grant-Harrigan, IT Manager at Roadtown. “Priya has allowed us to grow by increasing volume throughput without having to increase labor.” With Priya, adtown is able to operate in a real-time environment, giving the staff immediate access to data regarding inventory, quantities and location. This is key in a grocery operation like Roadtown’s, where many items are highly perishable and need to get into stores right away. Prior to installing Priya, Roadtown’s system for tracking inventory as it moved among the various warehouse buildings was lacking. “With Priya, we now know whether an item is on a shelf or a forklift,” says Davis Sooknanan, IT Project Manager “That real-time information has driven new efficiency gains.” In addition to improving basic operations, Roadtown has been able to better measure performance. By measuring factors such as product velocity turns, operator productivity, and damaged goods data, the company has been able to take steps to improve them. “If you can measure something, you can improve it,” notes Grant-Harrigan. Priya has also allowed Roadtown to select different operational models for picking. The company uses RF picking in areas where it makes sense, in case pick and re-pack areas, and paper picking in freezer/cold space. The system also gives Roadtown the option of weighing meats individually or by averages for pallets and cases. Since installing Priya, Roadtown has successfully improved virtually all aspects of its warehousing operations. “Installing Priya has led to better management of all operations,” says Sooknanan. “None of this would have been possible without the collaboration of many people across multiple time zones in different countries Motek’s ability to work closely with other Microsoft business partners enabled Roadtown to transform their organization. The Pinnacle award recognizes our collective efforts.” said Ann Price, CEO of Motek, who was honored to attend this luncheon with Roadtown and celebrate their success.
