Federated Cooperatives Goes Live with Smart Warehouse Software
PRIYA WMS INSTALLED IN 6 WAREHOUSES IN WESTERN CANADA

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA (April 7, 2005)— —Federated Cooperatives Limited, a major food retailer in Western Canada, has successfully implemented Motek’s Priya warehouse management system in six warehouses. Since going live with Priya in the first facility three years ago, Federated has experienced productivity benefits that include improved inventory accuracy, better space utilization, and significant service level improvements.

Ranging in size from 250,000 sq. ft. to 500,000 sq. ft., Federated’s warehouses vary greatly and include four grocery facilities that manage everything from dry to perishable lines, including frozen, cheese, dairy and produce. Federated originally selected Priya for several reasons, including the fact that it was a Windows based product, written completely on a Microsoft platform. In addition, Priya offered Federated more flexibility in terms of how the company worked with and viewed data compared to the competition, all within one solution that didn’t require custom code.

Federated needed one system flexible enough to configure differently in unlike facilities yet consistent enough to run and maintain throughout its organization in the same manner. The ability to upgrade all of its sites annually with new releases without disturbing individually configured unique attributes at each location was essential. Moreover, training and maintenance for the solution Federated selected had to be easy to centralize and administer. Priya was an obvious choice for Federated because it is highly configurable and easy to deploy or change as needs arise yet requires no custom code to deploy. Priya enables Federated to run a diverse organization with one solution that is flexible and consistent at the same time. Federated initially installed Priya with a Motek team on site. Subsequent Priya implementations were configured and installed independently by Federated without the need for vendor assistance despite the fact that these sites were configured differently. “Once a customer learns how to configure Priya they can easily change and update the system independently” said Dawn Stramer Director of Services at Motek who managed the first Federated installation. Unlike other systems that require custom code or come with tool kits you must use to customize the functionality you need, Priya is ready to use out of the box and completely configurable to work as needed in each of your facilities. This means no coding is required to realize immediate benefits with Priya.

Federated has enjoyed the many benefits of the new system from day one. Voice Picking is one such example. Federated worked closely with Motek to implement Priya’s built in hands-free voice picking, company wide. Priya’s hands-free features have greatly boosted productivity, according to Phil Thieman, industrial engineering manager at Federated. “We’ve seen significant benefits in pick rate and pick flow accuracy,” he says, “as well as significant improvements in inventory accuracy.”

The new more accurate operational flow has become a way of life in Federated warehouses. “In addition to boosting productivity, Priya allows Federated to see operational trends in real time and make continuous operational improvements,” says Motek sales representative David Price. “Federated is using Priya to constantly raise the bar.””

Federated was able to improve inventory accuracy from 95 percent with its old system to better than 99 percent with Priya. This has greatly improved customers service levels. The visibility provided by Priya has also allowed the company to pick up 12 hours of time in terms of when inventory is available to fill orders.

Priya’s ready-to-go system, which requires no customization, was the key to fast results enabling Federated to implement tighter operational controls immediately. Voice technology reduces picking time by allowing workers to interact with Priya without taking their hands and eyes off their work. Accuracy is ensured as pick results are confirmed by speaking into wireless voice units. Engineered labor standards improve productivity 30% by allowing management to compare actual time versus engineered standards for every warehouse move.
